Happenings

We haven’t made much progress in the past few weeks. We’ve had a friend in town from Chicago and then my parents were in town for 2 weeks (yay!). So we got to relax and just hang out with friends and family. In addition we’re no longer running the gallery on weekends, so we should have tons of free time to work on and around the house.

With the weather getting so nice we seem to have spent more time in the garden than on the interior. Even though there’s not much of a garden there still seems to be plenty of up keeping work. Our lawn consists of weeds more than grass. I think the most grass we can claim to have is the monkey grass! But the weeds need to be mown nonetheless. In addition to the lawnmower I really think we need to get one of those electrical trimmers to get into the edges.

In the meanwhile we tried to order plants from the Spring Hill Nursery catalog. They offered us 50% off, so we would give them a try. The first thing that arrived was a white rose called “JFK”. We planted it next to the shed. The stem was already quite large, but the little bit of growth it had quickly died after we put it in the ground…maybe due to shock? Hopefully it will start to grow before long. Then the next shipment brought the remaining items, including a couple of ornamental grasses (which Patrick is a big fan of), some lavender and some other plants with which we want to attempt to hide the monster of an A/C unit.

We created a flower bed next to the back steps by recycling the bricks we have dug up from around the yard. The sorry little plants in the back are supposed to be the lavender from Spring Hill. Sadly they look more dead now than they did when they arrived in the box (Patrick’s already given up hope). Hopefully they too will recover, but it definitely isn’t making me want to reorder from a catalog! The other plant closer is one we’ve had in a pot in the loft for a couple of years. We thought we’d try to plant it outside and let it experience the wild, fresh air.

Patrick is temporarily putting one of his ornamental grasses in the pot we took the other plant out of. Notice our cute tiny herb garden in the back on the stairs.

And lastly we were able to pick up the patio furniture my parents left us behind (which has been stored at Patrick’s mom’s). Patrick’s sister was nice enough to assist us in transporting them over here in her truck. Last night we sat outside for a little while for the first time and just took in our new exterior surrounding. It also made us think about the endless list of things we still have to work on. Hopefully that extra time that we should now have on weekends will really come in handy.

Oh, and PS…we went to Lowe’s after work today and bought a number of plants. So hopefully we’ll get to have some fun playing in the dirt tomorrow. And unlike the catalog plants, these don’t look all pathetic and ready to die!

PSS…my mom left behind several gardening books. It will definitely help us newbie gardeners to get more familiar with gardening. The Cottage Living subscription that Patrick’s mom gave us for Christmas also arrived yesterday and will give us lots of inspiration. I was already “ohhh-ing” and “awwww-ing” all over the place in jealousy over those gorgeous gardens.

Shower Curtain

Unfortunately the window in our bathroom was placed in such a way that it has made it somewhat hard to place a shower into the bathtub because half the window would be in the shower. To prevent too much water from splashing onto the wooden window molding Patrick and I thought it would be a good idea to buy one of those curved shower rods in hopes of blocking some of the wood with the shower curtain. Even though the rod has been sitting in our closet for months we have now been able to hang it up because we wanted to paint the walls before putting up this permanent fixture. Up until now we have used our cheap plastic rod that is expandable. We’ve had it dangling on top of the tiles and the window crown molding so it wouldn’t damage the drywall and paint from fastening it onto the wall, and every time we hung our towels up (since we don’t have towel racks yet!) the rod was threatening to collapse on us. We finally put up our pretty curved (“for extra elbow room”) shower rod yesterday!

Ohhhhh, fancy! Look at that!

Shower curtain rod

Finally a shower rod that won’t fall on us. We also had to buy an extra long shower curtain liner because we’ve had to place the shower rod higher than the average shower curtain height due to the window being half-way in the shower. Not a problem with a 10-foot ceiling.

Past Two Weeks

We finished putting up all the blinds in the guest bedroom! So our guest can actually have some privacy…

Guest bedroom blinds

…well, except for the glass door to the living room…

…which we finally hung back up! Not finished like we hoped – one step at a time, I guess.

And cleaning it up a little for our guests that will soon be here.

The 60-Day Curse?

We heard a sudden noise. It turns out the noise was the range hood vent falling down!! The screws were ripped right out from the cabinet on the left side.

Hood vent

Because we were afraid the right side would not hold much longer we found a temporary solution to prop up the vent hood until the contractors were able to come by the next day.

And then we also noticed the base cap molding coming off by the butler’s pantry. What is this? The 60-day curse?

After a crazy/busy weekend we decided to tackle some more paint scraping and got busy with a butler’s pantry drawer and door today.

Updates All Around

We’ve had some house action again over the last few days. The contractors came back to fix some of the outstanding things, like the bathroom door and window received the missing cap molding.

They finally removed the pipe from our bedroom.

Molding was applied around the door in the laundry – still have to finish painting that part of the laundry room too. As you can see we’ve put up a quick curtain solution for some extra privacy on the door, and what you can’t see is that we also installed weather stripping on the bottom of the door to prevent water leaking in.

In addition our bathroom sink started leaking about 3 weeks ago and was finally fixed (we had an AWOL contractor for 4 weeks). What can I say – what a surprise that another plumbing-related item was not working!! After a month of using it at that. I think we better ask for an extended warranty on the plumbing work!

Then we had some more gardening fun…

Who said anything about child labor laws? Just kidding! Our niece came to spend the night and we decided to play in the dirt for a little bit. We started removing some grass so we can get a small vegetable garden started.

Bathroom & Yard Work

Yesterday I was feeling motivated to finish cutting in the edges in the bathroom. It was quite a challenge considering I couldn’t get the ladder too close in places like above the bathtub.

Bathroom door

Patrick was going to work on the second coat of paint today, but instead…

Back yard

…we ended up doing yard work, like cutting down a small tree sized vine that is devouring one of the trees, and eliminating the giant pile of branches still left over from when we cut up the giant branch. (Comparison photo of a month ago) All that’s left now are some bigger branches that we want to use for fire wood. The giant pile may not look like much in the distant photo, but I think the 2.5 hours of work spent on it speak for themselves. All I can say is I’m exhausted now!
